About the JoJa Band
The JoJa Band was formed in Savannah during the 1970s.  Blending elements of blues, rock, jazz, and R & B, their
original music and arrangements of select covers offer a unique take on Southern roots music.

The Trustees Theater show will be the third reunion concert for the JoJa Band. Ironically, it was tragedy that brought
the group back together. Former lead singer Howard Jobe passed away in 2002. At his funeral the remaining
members - some of whom had not seen each other in many years - realized the important role that the band had
played in each of their lives. This encounter led to the first JoJa Band Reunion Concert at Armstrong Atlantic State
University, with local singer “Chief” Dennis Hinely assuming the lead vocalist role. They also performed at this year’s
Savannah Blues & BBQ Festival at The Roundhouse.

In the 1970's era of Southern Rock bands it seemed that each Southern city had their own band. Macon had The
Allman Brothers, Jacksonville had Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet, Nashville had The Charlie Daniels Band,
Spartanburg had The Marshall Tucker Band. The list went on. In Savannah, it was The JoJa Band and its
predecessor The Easywalkers. Their music was and is an original blend of blues, rock, jazz and R&B. They toured
all over the Southeast throughout the late 1970s and into the early 1980s before breaking up in 1981. In Savannah
their usual haunts included The Roadhouse on the Westside and the Port O’ Call on River Street.

The group released two albums in its heyday: Cold Winds (1977) and City Lights (1979). Both albums have now
been combined onto one CD: Sooner Or Later - The Ragdoll Sessions. The title refers to a recording studio on
Savannah’s Southside where the albums were recorded. One of the best known songs from City Lights, “Cockroach
Blues,” has recently been used as the theme song for an extermination company.

The members of the JoJa Band are Danny Branson (bass), Steffens Clark (guitar), Bobby Hanson (harmonica and
vocals), Chief Dennis Hinely (guitar and vocals), Jimmy Maddox (keyboards, sax, and vocals), and Freddie Stringer
(drums and vocals).
